FERRER IS THROUGH

Rafael Nadal’s countryman, David Ferrer, has defeated Marinko Matosevic of Australia in the first round of the French Open.  Ferrer won the match in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Ferrer who has been given the 4th seed in this tournament was expected to put up a dominating performance against Matosevic and the Spaniard stood up to the expectations. He outsmarted his Australian opponent by playing some high quality tennis.

In the post match interview, Ferrer said, “It’s tough to play against Marinko because he is very good on his serve. He generates tremendous power and if he is in form, he can take the match away from you. Today, I think he was a little off colour and I took advantage of that. I tried to be consistent and I am happy that I won in straight sets.”

In the first set, the first three games went with the serve and Ferrer was leading by 2-1 when the 3rd game finished.

Ferrer got a breakthrough in the 4th game and then, by winning his next service game, he extended his lead to 4-1.

Ferrer was broken back in the 7th game which reduced his lead to 4-3. The next couple of games went with the serve and the score was 5-4 in the favour of Ferrer when the 9th game got over. The Spaniard broke Matosevic’s serve again in the 10th game and sealed the opening set by 6-4.

In the second set, Ferrer’s start was dreadful. He dropped his serve in the 1st and the 3rd game to get trailed by 0-3. But, after that, he just took his opponent apart. He won the next six games on the trot with three consecutive serve breaks and won the set by 6-3.

In the third set, Ferrer got a breakthrough in the very first game, but, he was broken back in the 4th game and the scores got levelled.

The next two games went with the serve and the scores remained equalized. Ferrer managed to sneak another breakthrough in the 7th game, but, again, he couldn’t consolidate on that and dropped his serve in the very next game to lose the advantage.

In the 9th game, Ferrer got a break chance again and he latched on that to make the score 5-4 in his favour. This time, the Spaniard didn’t let his opponent bounce back. He held his serve in the 10th game and won the third set by 6-4 to finish off the match.

FERRER WINS FOR SPAIN

Rafael Nadal’s countryman, David Ferrer, has defeated Nicolas Almagro in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open 2013. Ferrer won the match by 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-2. It was an amazing comeback by Ferrer. He was down by two sets, but, he showed tremendous character and didn’t give up. He kept fighting and eventually pulled off the victory to cruise into the final 4.

In the opening set, both the players held their service in the first six games and the scores were levelled at 3-3 at the end of the sixth game. Almagro got a breakthrough in the seventh game and he didn’t let Ferrer recover after that. He held his service in the eighth and the tenth game and won the first set by 6-4.

The second set was also a bit like the first one. Almagro held his entire serve and with the help of a serve break in the fifth game, he won the second set by the same margin of 6-4.

Ferrer was in trouble in the third set as well. He dropped his serve in the seventh game. Almagro served out the next game to take the lead of 5-3.

Almagro only had to hold his serve in the 10th game to win the match, but, he couldn’t do that. His service was broken consecutively in the 10th and the 12th game. Ferrer won the last four games on the trot and sealed the third set by 7-5.

In the fourth set, neither of the two players served well. Both of them dropped their serve four times in the set and the scores were tied at 6-6 at the end of the 12th game. The set was extended into the tie breaker in which Ferrer held his nerves and won the fourth set.

In the final set, Almagro lost the plot. He looked nervous and played some loose shots. The first four games went with the serve, but, thereafter, it was Ferrer all the way. He won the last four games with the help of serve breaks in the fifth and the seventh game and sealed the fifth set to move into the semi finals.

In the semi final, Ferrer will take on the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic and Tomas Berdych.
